WebPhilippe Pétain var en fransk general og politiker. Han var Frankrikes statssjef i perioden 1940–1944. Pétain utmerket seg som sjef for Verduns forsvarsområde under første verdenskrig i 1916. Han var øverstkommanderende for de franske styrker på Vestfronten i 1917–1918 og var umåtelig populær. Etter krigen ble han marskalk av Frankrike.
